AI Overviews and Zero-Click Search: What Contractors Should Do About It
A zero-click search is one that ends on the results page without the person visiting any website. Features like featured answers, map listings and AI-generated summaries, such as Google's AI Overviews, can give people what they need right there. For contractors, this does not mean search has stopped working. It means that the click is no longer the only thing worth measuring, and that some kinds of content will earn fewer visits than before.
This post explains how to think about it calmly, what changes for home service businesses and what to do next. We avoid made-up numbers because the effect varies by query, by region and over time.
What AI summaries change, and what they do not
AI summaries tend to be most visible on informational questions, the kind that begin with what, why or how. A homeowner asking why a furnace smells like burning dust may get a summary and never open an article. A homeowner searching for a plumber to fix a flooded basement tonight is in a different mode. They want a business, a phone number and reassurance, and that path usually runs through map results, business profiles, reviews and calls.
That split is useful. Informational content is likely to get fewer clicks, while urgent, local, high-intent searches still end in a call or a message. Your strategy should treat them differently.
Be the source that gets cited
When an AI summary includes links, it generally draws on pages that answer the question clearly and appear trustworthy. You cannot control which sources are chosen, but you can improve your odds of being useful. Write answer-first pages with specific, accurate information. Show real expertise and the people behind it. Keep pages current. Use clean structure and plain text so the main answer is readable without scripts.
Being cited is not the same as being clicked, but a citation can build familiarity. A homeowner who sees your company name next to a good answer may remember it when the need turns urgent.
Win the part of the page you can control: your profile
For local searches, the business profile and map results often take center stage. Make sure your Google Business Profile is accurate, complete and consistent with your website. Choose the right categories, list your real services and service area, add recent photos and keep your hours current, including holidays. Respond to every review. A visitor who calls straight from your profile never needed to open your site, so the profile has to do the persuading.
Track those calls, not only website visits. Call tracking, profile performance reports and a question at the start of every call, such as how did you find us, give a more honest picture than website traffic alone.
Create content that a summary cannot replace
A summary can state the general answer. It cannot show your technician diagnosing a problem in a specific neighborhood, your before-and-after photos, your pricing method, your guarantee terms or the experience of customers who hired you. Invest in content that carries those local, first-hand details: job write-ups, area pages with real examples, checklists with photos, short videos explaining a repair, and clear descriptions of how you work.
This kind of content has two benefits. It gives readers a reason to click through when they want more than a summary, and it gives AI systems information that is specific to you.
Do not chase every question
Some topics are better left to the summaries. If a question has a simple, universal answer, writing a long article about it may bring little benefit. Focus on topics tied to a decision: choosing between repair and replacement, understanding what a quote includes, preparing for an inspection, knowing when an issue is an emergency. These questions lead to hiring decisions, and a thoughtful answer positions you as the sensible choice.
Strengthen the brand searches
As more discovery happens off your site, being known by name becomes more valuable. People who recognize your company name, trucks, yard signs or community involvement may search for you directly. Support this through consistent branding, local sponsorships, helpful content and referrals. Check what appears when someone searches your company name: your site, your profile, your reviews and your social pages should present a consistent, accurate picture.
Measure the right things
If your analytics show fewer visits to blog posts, that alone is not a crisis. Ask what matters to the business: calls, form submissions, booked jobs and revenue by source. Compare those over time. Use Search Console to see impressions and clicks together, since a page may be seen often but clicked less when an answer box appears. If impressions hold while clicks fall for informational pages but calls from profiles and service pages stay steady, the shift may be a change in how people reach you and not a loss of business.
A practical response plan
First, identify your ten most valuable services and make sure each has a strong, answer-first page. Second, audit your profile and listings for accuracy. Third, set up call and form tracking so you can see where jobs come from. Fourth, add original local proof to your main pages. Fifth, review your informational articles and either improve them with first-hand detail or consolidate the ones that no longer serve a purpose. Sixth, revisit this plan every quarter, because search features keep changing.
